Neelanjana Singh, nutritionist with Heinz Nutri Life Clinic says, "Recipes that help one lose weight should not only comprise the right ingredients but also employ the right cooking methods." Get the pen and paper; let's make a shopping list as we jot down the ingredients to recipes for healthy weight loss.

Weight loss recipes: Tomato basil salad
3 large tomatoes
50g tofu
Olive oil
3 cloves of garlic
Salt and pepper to taste

Slice 3 large tomatoes. Add 50 g cubed silken tofu. Combine 1 teaspoon olive oil, 3 cloves of minced garlic, salt and pepper to taste in a jar with a tight fitting lid. Drizzle the oil mixture over tomatoes and tofu. Sprinkle with 5 to 6 minced basil leaves and allow to stand for 15 minutes in a covered bowl before serving.

Weight loss recipes: Pomegranate and gram salad
1 pomegranate
1 cup boiled gram
¼ tspchaat masala
1 tsp lemon juice

Take one pomegranate and peel to remove outer covering. To 1 cup pomegranate seeds add half a cup of boiled black gram. Add ¼ tspchaat masala and 1 tsp lemon juice and mix well. Add salt to taste. Chill and serve.

Weight loss recipes: Lebanese cauliflower
1 cauliflower
2 tbsp sesame seeds
5-6 cloves of garlic
2tbsp lemon juice

Take one head of a cauliflower and break into smaller flowerets. Steam/boil till slightly tender.

In a blender, add 2 tbsp sesame seeds, 5-6 cloves of garlic and 2tbsp lemon juice. Blend till the mixture is even but coarsely ground. Toss the steamed cauliflower flowerets in this sesame paste and mix well. Add finely chopped coriander leaves and bake for 10 minutes in an oven. Serve hot.

Weight loss recipes: Spicy oats upma
3 tbsp oats
½ cup water
½ tsp cooking oil
1 onion
½ chopped tomato
2 green chillies
1 tsp chopped coriander leaves
1 tbsp soaked dal

Take 3 tbsp oats and add to ½ cup water. Cook on a stove for 2 mins or microwave for 30 seconds. In a pan, take ½ tsp cooking oil and heat it. Add 1 chopped onion, ½ chopped tomato, 2 green chillies and 1 tsp chopped coriander leaves. Saute till slightly cooked. Add 1 tbsp soaked dal (washed black gram ). The partially cooked oats are added to the sauteed vegetable and dal mixture. Cook for a couple of minutes till it acquires a slightly dry consistency. Add red chilli powder and chopped curry leaves to taste. Serve hot.

Weight loss recipes: Strawberry smoothie
½ cup strawberries
1/2 cup skimmed milk
½ cup low fat yogurt
½ tsp honey
6 to 7 almonds

Coarsely chop ½ cup strawberries and gradually add 1/2 cup skimmed milk, ½ cup low fat yogurt and ½ tsp honey to it in a blender . Once it is evenly blended pour into a tall glass and sprinkle finely chopped 6 to 7 almonds. Makes a refreshing drink that is very high on nutrition and taste yet low on calories.

Weight loss recipes: Almond papaya and banana smoothie
100ml ice
200ml skimmed yogurt
1 chopped (ripe) banana
1 cup chopped (ripe) papaya
5-8 almonds
1 tsp drinking chocolate or coffee (for the strong hearted)

Blend all ingredients together for an icy cold and smooth almond papaya and banana smoothie.

Weight loss recipes: French style dressing
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1/4 tsp white pepper, ground
1 tsp unsalted tomato paste
7 tbsp olive oil
1/3 cup red or white wine vinegar
2 tsp water
1/2 tsp fresh chopped onion

In a large mason jar or other container with a tight lid, combine all ingredients, shake it up and serve.

Weight loss recipes: Strawberry and banana smoothie
100ml ice
200ml skimmed yogurt
1 chopped (ripe) banana
½ cup ripe strawberries
1 tsp honey
5 almonds

Blend all ingredients to get a chilled, liquid consistency strawberry and banana smoothie

Weight loss recipes: Balsamic vinaigrette
Although this makes a great, simple salad dressing, it is equally delicious as a marinade for meat or when drizzled on steamed vegetables.

3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
3/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/2 tsp dried oregano
2 tsp Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper to taste

In a bowl, whisk together the olive oil, apple cider vinegar, basil, and garlic. Refrigerate until ready to serve

Weight loss recipes: Natural peanut butter and banana smoothie
100ml ice
200ml skimmed yogurt
1 tbs natural preservative-free peanut butter
1 chopped (ripe) banana
1 tsp honey

Blend all ingredients together, and add a little milk (if needed) to get a thin drinking consistency for this natural peanut butter and banana smoothie.
