What is a Balanced Life ??.............156912

When I imagine what it looks like to live a balanced life, two thoughts come to mind.

The first is the “Jack theory.” All work and no play makes for a cranky Jack. All this and no that, too much of this and too little of that, just doesn’t work. The challenge here is to balance what we must do with what we enjoy and want to do. We need to carve out time for the serious stuff as well as play.

The other way to live a balanced life has more to do with going with the flow; not letting the inevitable glitch in our day throw us off-balance, sending us careening off course. It’s about staying balanced.

In other words, the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. No matter how carefully a project is planned, something may still ‘go wrong’ with it. When lucky, we experience a minor glitch; a glitch so small and short-lived that you hardly notice it – a transient fault that corrects itself.

However, there are the times when a hornet’s nest of difficulties presents itself, and you need to change course, immediately, lest you get knocked off your tush!

Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.
Thomas Merton

Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.
Brian Tracy

Toleration is the greatest gift of the mind; it requires the same effort of the brain that it takes to balance oneself on a bicycle.
Helen Keller

The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man.

An excellent man, like precious metal, is in every way invariable; A villain, like the beams of a balance, is always varying, upwards and downwards.
John Locke

In art and dream may you proceed with abandon. In life may you proceed with balance and stealth.
Patti Smith

But all the money in the world cannot make you happy either, so there has to be a balance.
Heidi Klum

A wise woman recognizes when her life is out of balance and summons the courage to act to correct it, she knows the meaning of true generosity, happiness is the reward for a life lived in harmony, with a courage and grace.
Suze Orman

I do think the heart can balance out the mind, if your heart is in a good place it can give you the strength to do the right thing and behave the right way and overcome the mind.
Alexis Arguello

We should try to live a normal and balanced life. You may ask me to define it. Well we can have a balanced and normal life, if we live our life fulfilling our duties and responsibilities faithfully but we should try to be, not being of this world, and not be attached with this world. We have to live in this world boldly; we should not try to escape away or run from our responsibilities as a wife, a husband, a child or a citizen. We do not have to run in jungles, or hide in Himalayas or somewhere in holy places and not bear our responsibilities.

Guru Nanak gave a very beautiful example for explaining this concept. A married girl lives with her parents, but she is in love with her husband, though he is far away. She does all household chores, talks with her friends but her real attention lies in her husband. Similarly, we have to live in this world but our real attention should be towards our beloved Father. This means that our real attention should be in the Holy Spirit, Divine Word or Ram Naam.

We have to live in this world but we have to meditate also. We have to keep the balance, because a certain load of karma can be cleared only by facing life, not just by attending only to our meditation. If you become too absorbed in Holy Spirit, sometimes the Holy Word will withdraw its grace so that you can work in this world also.

Christ said that you can’t have two masters. Either mammon is your master or God is your master. (No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon – Matt 6:24). When you are below the eye centre, you are the slave of your mind and when you are above the eye centre the God is your master. To keep a balance in life, you have to learn to hold your attention at the eye centre. If you do this and if you are attached to the spirit within; you will be able to keep balance in your life. You will be able to do your worldly duties and achieve that goal for which you have been given human form. This is called as balanced life.

We have to go through the karmic accounts which we have accumulated in previous lives but we should not forget our real objective of self-realization and God-realization. We know so many negative things happening in this world. We know these things do happen and everybody has to pay for his own karmas. People are just dancing to the tune of their mind, so we should learn to adjust. If we try to convert all people to do all good things and try to solve problems of this world, we would never succeed. We can only rise above these problems. If we start picking up the thorns of the world, we can never succeed, but if we have strong shoes in your feet, these pricks do not bother us. We should change our attitude and raise it to such level that we remain unperturbed by these problems. People may call it as escapism but that is not true. We do not have to escape ourselves from the problem but face them boldly but should remain emotionally unattached to them.

We try to escape from situations because we think we are weak. We can’t face them. But that is cowardice. We think we are influenced by the people and that they pull us down. But if we are strong then we would not be frightened. We will be able to influence them. So we must build that strength within ourselves. It has to come from within, not from running away from life. Why should we run away from situations? Face them boldly.

If you are tied to a chain then you can move only within a limited area. So if we are tied to our meditation every day, no matter how much we’re involved in other things, we will always remain within that circle. If chain is broken, the of course you are absolutely gone, you’re involved. So the chain of meditation should never be broken. Meditation should be done every day without fail. You are tied to the bulldozer of Holy Spirit or Ram Naam and it will not let you go anywhere.

Some people will try to close themselves off in a room and don’t want to lead a natural, normal adult life. They try to meditate all day and then the mind reacts, and they lose their balance. Meditation is a slow process. That is why it is called as Sahaj Yoga (the natural way). You have to be part of the world and also attend to meditation. You cannot fight with your mind day and night. You will have to divert it into worldly affairs, and then bring it back into meditation. Otherwise, sometimes you may build much of suppression and then out of frustration, mind may react, in abnormal or violent way. That is not a normal and healthy approach. Meditation is a way of life, it is not just closing yourself in a room and cutting away from everyone and sitting in meditation. That is not meditation. Meditation should reflect in your whole life, in your complete 24 hours. It becomes a part of your life, your way of life. That way your whole day is spent in meditation.

We shall have to try our best for our living in this world, and then if we do not achieve it, we should leave it to the will of the Lord. The results should be left to Him. This does not mean that we should not try our best to get promotion and work hard to earn all that. We have certain responsibilities and duties which we must do in this world. At the same time, we should not get involved with them in such a manner that we forget our real purpose. These are just means to achieve a certain end. We should not forget the end after getting much involved in means.
